| KRATKA VSEBINA | The article describes the history of MunicipalLibrary Jesenice and library activity in the Upper Sava Valley. First libraries in Jesenice emerged with the emergences of iron foundries. Successful ironmakers had richly furnished living premises in mansions nextto production plants. In 1885 Reading and Singing Society was established in Jesenice with its seat and reading room in the Kos Manor. On 11 September 1904 Academic Holiday Society Prosveta opened a mobile library inFerjan´ s Salon at Sava - that was the first public library in Jesenice. Some other society libraries were founded before the First World War. In the period between the two wars about 60 societies were active in Jesenice,among which the three most important were: liberal Sokol, social-democraticSvoboda and clerical Orel. Sokol had its library in Sokolski dom (Sokol Home) at Sava, Svoboda in Delavski Dom Pri Jelenu (Worker´ s home) and Orelin Krekov dom (Krek´s home). There was also a technical and fiction libraryof the Carniolan Industrial Corporation with the premises at the Ironworks at Sava. During the Second World War the libraries were closed but conscious people took the books and safeguarded them. In February 1945 the book stock from prewar libraries was used to establish the Centralna sindikalna knjižnica na Jesenicah (Central Trade Union Library Jesenice) inKrekov dom, which was renamed to Ljudska knjižnica Jesenice (People´s library Jesenice) on 8 February 1954. In 1961 it was granted the status of a central library and it started to take care about nine local libraries and two big libraries in Kranjska Gora and Žirovnica. On 1 January 1962 it was renamed to Občinska knjižnica Jesenice (Municipal Library Jesenice). After 1991 the Library employed new staff. The fundamental library activitywas computer-supported. It is enriched by other activities. Most subsidiaries were renovated in last two decades, and only the central library in Jesenice is still waiting for a new building. |
